CELPIP vs. IELTS for Canadian PR: IRCC accepts both, and neither is officially easier. Many people already living in Canada find CELPIP simpler to score well on. It’s fully computer-based, uses Canadian accents, and maps one-to-one to CLB levels. IELTS suits people who speak better face-to-face with an examiner.

Quick Verdict: CELPIP or IELTS?

Choose CELPIP if:

  • You live in Canada and hear Canadian English every day.
  • You type faster than you write by hand.
  • You’d rather record your answers than talk to an examiner.
  • You want one sitting, under three hours, with results in 3 to 4 business days.

Choose IELTS if:

  • You freeze when talking to a microphone but relax with a real person.
  • You learned British or Australian English.
  • You’re also applying to the UK, Australia or New Zealand.
  • You write faster by hand and want the paper test.

If you still can’t decide, take a timed practice test in each format. Pick the one where you score higher.

How We Compared the Tests

We used IRCC’s official language test equivalency charts and the test makers’ own format and fee pages, all checked in October 2026. For fees, we used CELPIP’s published Canadian price and one Montreal IELTS center’s listing on ielts.org.

To be upfront: ALC-ComInternational is an accredited CELPIP test center and also teaches IELTS preparation. We’ve tried to keep this comparison fair, and the official sources are linked so you can check them.

CELPIP vs. IELTS, Section by Section

Listening: CELPIP is easier for most Canada residents

CELPIP has six listening parts and 38 questions, all set in Canadian situations: a problem at work, a news item, a neighborhood discussion (CELPIP). If you live in Montreal or Toronto, you already know these accents.

IELTS listening has four parts and 40 questions, with a wider mix of accents. The harder problem is the CLB conversion. IELTS asks for 8.0 in listening to reach CLB 9, compared with 7.0 in the other three skills. Many IELTS candidates lose points in listening.

Reading: close to a tie

CELPIP has four reading parts and 38 questions, including correspondence, a diagram task and opinion pieces. IELTS General Training has three sections and 40 questions, based on notices, workplace texts and one longer passage.

Neither is clearly easier. IELTS requires 7.0 (CLB 9) in reading, which is lower than its listening requirement.

Writing: CELPIP has a practical edge

On CELPIP,P you write two tasks in 53 minutes: an email and a response to survey questions. You type your answers, with a word counter and spell-check on screen.

IELTS General Training also has two tasks: a letter of at least 150 words and an essay of at least 250 words, in 60 minutes. The essay is longer and more formal than anything on CELPIP. There’s no spell-check, even on the computer version.

If spelling costs you marks, CELPIP’s spell-check fixes much of it.

Speaking: depends on you

This is the deciding section for many people.

CELPIP gives you eight short tasks in about 15 minutes. You might give advice, describe a scene, compare two options,s or handle a difficult situation. You speak into a headset with a timer on screen. Nobody nods, smiles, or helps you along.

IELTS is a live conversation in three parts that lasts 11 to 14 minutes. A good examiner keeps it moving, and some people perform better that way. Others find a person watching them more stressful than a microphone.

How scores convert to CLB

CLB CELPIP (each skill) IELTS Listening IELTS Reading IELTS Writing IELTS Speaking
10 10 8.5 8.0 7.5 7.5
9 9 8.0 7.0 7.0 7.0
8 8 7.5 6.5 6.5 6.5
7 7 6.0 6.0 6.0 6.0

CLB 9 matters. It’s the level where your English starts earning the maximum skill-transferability points in Express Entry. On CELPIP,P that means a 9 in every skill.

Is CELPIP Easier Than IELTS?

Not officially. Both tests measure the same CLB standard, and IRCC treats them equally. In practice, many candidates living in Canada find CELPIP easier because the accents are familiar, the writing section has spell-check, and the scores convert directly to CLB levels. IELTS is often easier for people who speak better in conversation.

So the useful question is which test is easier for you. Your weakest skill usually decides it.

Which Test Fits Your Situation?

  • You moved to Montreal two years ago and work in English. CELPIP. You already know the accents and the everyday topics.
  • You’re applying from India or the Philippines and already took IELTS for study. IELTS General Training, if test dates near you are easier to book. Remember it must be General Training, not Academic.
  • Your listening is strong,g but your spelling isn’t. CELPIP.
  • You get nervous with a microphone but chat easily with strangers. IELTS.

What Each Test Costs, Including Retakes

CELPIP-General costs $299 plus tax in Canada (CELPIP). IELTS General Training is listed at $339 for the computer-delivered test at one Montreal center. Fees vary by center, so confirm when you book.

The higher cost is a retake. If you miss your CLB target by one skill, you pay for the whole test again. IELTS now offers a One Skill Retake, but IELTS Canada says IRCC has not accepted it for immigration (IELTS Canada). For PR, plan on retaking the full test either way.

That’s why a few weeks of preparation usually costs less than a second attempt.

Before You Book: Checks That Save You a Retake

  • Book the right version. For PR, you need IELTS General Training (not Academic) or CELPIP-General (not CELPIP-General LS, which is for citizenship).
  • Check the expiry date. Results are valid for two years. They must still be valid on the day you submit your PR application, not just when you create your Express Entry profile.
  • Know your target per skill. One low skill can pull down your whole CLB result.
  • Think about French. TEF Canada and TCF Canada results can add points to your profile. If you have some French, it may be worth testing both languages.
